Love to Dance is hosting the first major pointe shoe seminar in Auckland.
The Seminar will be held over two days
Saturday 29th May 2010 (Pukekohe)
2.30 to 5.30pm
We are very excited to be able to offer you tickets to this event at only $10.00 per person.
The seminar will be run by Esther Juon, for those of you who do not know Esther she has developed a pointe shoe fitting method over the last 25 years and is based on the following anatomical facts -
★The foot has a natural three-point support system and when the foot moves onto demi–pointe, the three points of support move to a new position.
★However when the foot goes fully on pointe the three points of support are lost entirely so the pointe shoe must replace the three points of support to the dancers foot.
The shoe has to be fitted as tightly as possible, not allowing the foot to slip down inside the shoe, causing damage to the toe joints and the feet in particular.
To further protect the dancers feet each toe and the metatarsal heads will be taped for support as well as protection against rubbing of the skin during pointe work.
The fitter will be working closely with the dancer’s feedback and it is important that the dancer reports what she can feel and experience.
About Esther -
Esther was born in Switzerland and trained as a classical dancer by Armin Wild and also at the Opera House, Zurich.
In 1972 Esther came to London to further her studies in dance. However she unfortunately suffered a very bad fall, which ended her career as a dancer.
Several years later she returned to the dance world as a ballet teacher and she holds two teaching diplomas the latest gained in London in 2004.
Naturally, Esthers emphasis when teaching or fitting dance shoes, has always been towards preventing injury.
Esther founded Dance Laines, her shop and ballet school which opened in Brighton (UK) in 1985 www.DanceLaines.co.uk
Esther realised there seemed to be no reliable system for assessing and fitting pointe shoes. Every teacher had different ideas of how this should be done. Esther became passionate about establishing recognised standards so as to minimise the risks associated with pointe work.
Esther attended pointe shoe fitting seminars held in London by GAMBA, PORSELLI, and FREED, in the mid 1980's. Esther Juon and Dance Laines soon became renowned as a centre of excellence.
Remember that correctly fitting pointe shoes will save your feet
Esther is now an expert in the field and she has written a book on the subject 'POINTE SHOE SECRETS'.
Nicolas Grishko came to London in 1995. Nicolas was so impressed with Esthers work he invited her to Moscow to fit Pointe shoes at the famous BOLSHOI BALLET. In recognition of her contribution to the safe fitting of pointe shoes Esther was awarded a Special Diploma by the Diaghilev Association.
Research into the correct fitting of pointe shoes continued in the U.K. with the assistance of her friend and adult pupil Lucy Redhead SRP, MCSP, MSc, lecturer in anatomy and biomechanics at the University of Brighton, and podiatrist Helen Morrell, M.Ch., D.Pod.M., C.P.S. (Sports Pod)
Esther Juon's articles were published in the 'Young Dancer' magazine, Dancing Times and European Dance News. Esther and Lucy have lectured at the British Ballet Organisation, at regional R.A.D. courses, at the London's Children Ballet and at various ballet schools in the UK and Ireland.
In 1999 Esther’s work was presented at IADMS (International Association for Dance Medicine on and Science.
She continued to lecture and write articles in the UK until 2005 when she re-located to New Zealand. In 2006 Esther was invited by the British Ballet Organisation (NZ), to undertake a lecture tour of the North and South Islands.
This tour gave her an insight into the situation in New Zealand with feet and pointe shoes. In December 2009 Esther became the importer of Grishko pointe shoes and so besides importing pointe shoes is also opening the very first National Pointe Shoe Fitting Centre.
Esther is now collaborating with Rachel Kyle DipPhty, MHSc, and Tony Snell from Plus Rehab to bring to New Zealand an education program for dancers, teachers and fitters of pointe shoes.
DAY TWO - Sunday 30th May (Love to Dance, Pukekohe)
8.30am to 7.30pm
FITTING & PRE POINTE ASSESSMENTS
Pointe shoe fittings will be by appointment at a cost of $35.00 per person, the pointe shoe fitting will take approximately 1 hour per student, we would be pleased if the teacher and or parent can attend at this time.
Pre pointe assessments are also by appointment only and will take approximately 1 hour at a cost of $80.00 per student. The assessment is done with Rachel Kyle or Tony Snell from Plus Rehab. Both are fully qualified physiotherapists - you can visit their website at www.plusrehab.com for further information. Students will be given a range of exercises and 'tested' to see if they are ready for the next step of going 'on pointe', the assessment can also be done for students who have recently gone 'on pointe' to make sure that their bodies are coping with pointe work.
